Mayor Booker, who took office in July 2006, has spent his entire professional life in Newark. He is a partner in the Newark, New Jersey law firm of Booker, Rabinowitz, Trenk, Lubetkin, Tully, DiPasquale & Webster and is also the founder of Newark Now, a grassroots nonprofit group.
After serving as a staff attorney for the Urban Justice Center and as a program coordinator of the Newark Youth Project, Mr. Booker upset a four-term incumbent to become Newark's Central Ward Councilman in 1998.
In addition to serving on the NJTPA Board of Trustees, Mayor Booker is a member of the Executive Committee of Yale Law School, the Columbia University Teachers' College Board of Trustees, and the boards at the Black Alliance for Educational Options, North Star Academy, Integrity Inc., and the International Longevity Center. Mayor Booker holds a B.A. in political science and an M.A. in sociology from Stanford University. He also studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, receiving an honors degree in modern history. He earned his law degree from Yale University.
