About Transportation Management Associations
Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) are private, non-profit, member-controlled organizations established to work with employers and governments to help provide effective and efficient commuting and other transportation options. They also frequently work in support of smart growth initiatives aimed at promoting efficient land-use patterns. A TMA Council of NJ (TMAC NJ) is comprised of the Executive Directors of New Jersey's eight Transportation Management Associations.
TMA activities that serve to reduce traffic congestion include promoting and supporting commuter vanpools and carpools; working with employers to employ flex-time, telecommuting and compressed work initiatives; managing shuttle services; and promoting walking and bicycling. The TMAs provide information on available public transit and other local transportation services. They also assist with the development of Emergency Ride Home programs and play an important role in construction mitigation and emergencies, providing timely information about road and transit conditions and providing alternative modes.
There are eight TMAs currently operating in the state of New Jersey. Seven TMAs operate in the NJTPA region. They are: Meadowlink, TransOptions, Ridewise of Raritan Valley, Keep Middlesex Moving (KMM), HART Commuter Information Services (HART), Greater Mercer TMA (formerly Greater Princeton TMA) and Hudson TMA. Greater Mercer TMA covers areas in both the NJTPA and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) regions and Cross County Connection TMA serves an area entirely outside the NJTPA region. The map above shows each TMA’s service area.
As of July 1, 2011 (FY 2012), the NJDOT transferred the management and administration of the State of New Jersey's federally funded TMA program to the NJTPA. The NJTPA now oversees the development of annual work programs and coordinates activities among the TMAs, the subregions, NJ Transit, NJDOT and other partners in regional mobility. This arrangement is intended to increase the level of coordination and cooperation between NJTPA priorities and TMA activities in areas such as data collection, outreach, shuttle services and the development and implementation of the NJTPA's long-range Regional Transportation Plan.
