Introduction
Ten years ago, the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) established a set of six broad goals for transportation planning in northern New Jersey.
These goals were developed cooperatively with partner agencies, stakeholder groups, and the general public, and were adopted by the NJTPA Board of Trustees as part of the 1995 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP). They constitute the NJTPA’s priorities for the 13-county northern New Jersey region, and help to guide all regional transportation planning decisions.
This report asks, “Are We There Yet?” In other words, how much progress have we made, as a region, toward achieving the six goals? To evaluate the region’s progress, a variety of performance indicators are discussed, highlighting key trends that have occurred in northern New Jersey over the past ten to twenty years.
This report was prepared as part of the development of the 2005 Regional Transportation Plan (RTP) for northern New Jersey. It is based on extensive data gathering and analysis by the NJTPA central staff. For planning professionals and other interested parties, a more detailed technical report, including data tables and methodological notes, is also available from the NJTPA.
