Blog Article - Port Authority Details Trans-Hudson Demand Study Findings

Forecasted PABT Passenger Demand GrowthDecember 2016 - Port Authority Bus Terminal passenger demand is expected to grow by more than 50 percent, from 232,000 average weekday passengers in 2011 to as many as 337,000 in 2040, according to a Port Authority forecast. 

This projected growth led the Port Authority Board of Commissioners to authorize a study of available strategies to meet and manage trans-Hudson demand over the next 30 years, as the Board considers next steps in planning a major investment to this critical transit facility. Project Manager Lou Venech of the Port Authority Planning Department presented the findings of the study at the December 12 joint meeting of the NJTPA Planning & Economic Development and Project Prioritization committees.
 

Report - Recommendations for NEC Future in EIS Final Report

December 2016 - After four years of gathering ideas from elected and state officials, as well as the public, the Federal Railroad Administration in December 2016 released its recommendation for faster, more modern train travel along the busy Northeast Corridor.  An overview is provided in a Washington Post article.  The recommendations are contained in the Tier 1 Final EIS report, available on the NEC Future website: http://www.necfuture.com/

Website  - Hudson Tunnel Project

November 2016 - A website. http://www.hudsontunnelproject.com,  provides updates on the Hudson Tunnel Project. Currently, the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) and NJ TRANSIT are jointly preparing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to evaluate the Hudson Tunnel Project. The Project is intended to preserve the current functionality of the Northeast Corridor’s (NEC) Hudson River rail crossing between New Jersey and New York and strengthen the resiliency of the NEC.

Video - Why the Gateway Project is Needed Now

Fall 2015 - The Raritan Valley Rail Coalition released a video featuring U.S. Sen. Cory Booker, Somerset County Freeholder Peter Palmer, third vice chairman of the NJTPA Board of Trustees, and others talking about the need to fund Amtrak's Gateway Project, which could double rail capacity across the Hudson River.
