Opportunities Abound: The IIJA and the Future of Transportation Investment
The IIJA was adopted into law to much excitement by the transportation community. But what does the law really do? What are the new funding programs and how will they transform transportation planning and investment? This session will provide an overview of the law, including the nearly dozen new discretionary programs available to state, regional, and local governments.
Moderator: Charles Kenny, Middlesex County Commissioner and NJTPA Second Vice Chair
Speaker: David Behrend, Deputy Executive Director, North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority
Speaker: Lois Goldman, Director of Long-Range Planning, NJTPA

4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Imagine This: The Arts Bring Projects to Life!
How can you attract shoppers to a struggling business corridor? How do you draw visitors to a historic canal reimagined as a public greenway? What’s an effective way to creatively engage residents in visioning the region’s transportation future? How can we foster a community-driven planning process? One answer to these and other common questions among planners and policy makers is: the arts! In this session, panelists will describe how they have successfully applied the arts to bring a variety of projects to life. The takeaway? Creative expression can foster a sense of place and community that’s key to successful planning and revitalization efforts. From a transportation-themed story slam to a kid’s puppet show about long-range planning, this session will show you how you can effectively incorporate the arts throughout your planning and outreach work.
Moderator: Charles Kenny, Middlesex County Commissioner and NJTPA Second Vice Chair
Speaker: Miriam Salerno, Senior Research Manager, Voorhees Transportation Center (RU-POET)
Speaker: Rachel Brown, Project Coordinator, RU-POET
Speaker: Ted Ritter, Manager External Affairs, North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority

Conducting RSAs During a Pandemic
A Road Safety Audit (RSA) is a collective, participatory process by which an interdisciplinary team is formed to conduct an independent audit of traffic safety issues. However, the ongoing pandemic has posed challenges to conducting RSAs with low risk of transmission due to the need to perform in-field observations while holding a discourse of issues amongst the RSA team. Our group has developed various safety guidance and technological innovations for performing RSAs during a pandemic.
Moderator: Keith Hamas, Principal Planner, NJTPA
Speaker: Matthew Maher, Senior Associate, Traffic Engineer, Stantec
Speaker: Julia Steponanko, Engineer, Greenman-Pedersen, Inc.
Speaker: Anthony Durante, Senior Associate, Michael Baker International.
