Registration of Electric Vehicles (EV) in the region continues to grow, with almost 30,000 new EVs in the second half of 2024.

“Over the past three years, we’ve witnessed a significant surge in electric vehicle adoption,” said NJTPA Planner Zenon Tech-Czarny in a presentation to the
April 14 meeting of the Regional Transportation Advisory Committee (RTAC). Within the NJTPA’s region, EV registration jumped by 42 percent between December 2023 and December 2024. The increase of 29,696 EVs in the second half of 2024 (June-December) was the highest increase in a six-month period to date.
About 105,000 new EVs will have to hit the road between December 2024 and December 2025 to reach the statewide goal of 330,000 EVs by the end of 2025. In 2024, 13.56 percent of new vehicles sold were EVs, which now comprise about 3 percent of all vehicles in New Jersey.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV) are the dominant type of EVs, accounting for 77 percent of registrations in 2024, compared with 22 percent for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV).
The number of EVs are rising in every county in the NJTPA region. Passaic saw a significant increase of 58 percent from December 2023 to December 2024, with a total of 7,229 EVs. Union (11,127) and Warren (1,465) also saw a 50 percent increase in EV registration during that time.
As of December, Bergen and Middlesex continue to lead the region in the overall number of EVs with 32,619, and 27,215, respectively, followed by Monmouth, 19,760.
EVs are not only rising in overall numbers but also in relation to total vehicles. EVs account for 5 percent of all vehicles registered in Somerset (5.05 percent), followed by Bergen (4.54 percent) and Middlesex (4.26 percent).

EV Charging Infrastructure Program
The NJTPA recently launched the Subregional Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Program. It provides funding to install charging infrastructure on subregions’ property for fleet or public use. NJTPA will work with subregions at any stage of their planning process. For more information, contact Tech-Czarny at
