The projects were approved for grants through the NJTPA’s fiscal year 2017 and 2018 Local Safety and High Risk Rural Roads programs, which provide federal funds to counties and cities for cost-effective solutions that can make an immediate impact on their target areas. The Board approved allocating $47.85 million for Local Safety Program projects and nearly $3 million for a High Risk Rural Roads Program project. The $50.8 million in overall funds allocated to these projects marks a new high for the programs. The Board also approved a $500,000 grant for Hudson County to investigate ways to improve safety on a portion of John F. Kennedy Blvd. That grant is funded throught the NJTPA's Local Capital Project Delivery Program. Once the study concludes the project will advance to the Local Safety Program to begin design phase.
