Middlesex County, with a population of 809,858, is situated in the heart of New Jersey. The state's major transportation systems - the New Jersey Turnpike, the Garden State Parkway, the Northeast Corridor rail line, Routes 1 and 9, Interstate 287 - converge in the county, forming a virtual crossroads for the state.

Divisions of large companies, including Merrill Lynch, Bristol Myers-Squibb and Johnson & Johnson, operate within the county. New Brunswick, the county seat, is home to the main campus of Rutgers University. The county has experienced suburban growth and a boom in distribution centers centered on the Turnpike and is home to numerous industrial parks. The southwestern part of the county remains less developed.
