Overview
The NJTPA extensively uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology that can manage, analyze and present geographic and other data – data that inform much of the agency’s transportation decisions..
This tool incorporates layers of information, including transportation, such as roads, rail lines, bus routes, airports and ports; land use data; aerial photography; and other planning data, like the NJ Office for Planning Advocacy’s centers and planning areas. NJTPA also collects environmental data, including the location of wetlands, parks and historic sites. All of these layers allow NJTPA to assess the potential impacts a project could have on the region as the agency develops plans, programs and planning studies.
The NJTPA also maintains the NJTPA
Open Data Portal
, which makes available geographic and related data that the agency collects and stores. While some of the data originates at the NJTPA, the portal also includes information from other local, regional and national sources. The Open Data Portal helps ensure that data are current, accurate and suitable for use by the NJTPA staff, the subregions, partner agencies and the public..
