Event date: 6/26/2018 8:30 AM

Event Summary:

The concept of complete streets is to design streets for all users and all ability levels. The successful implementation of this concept requires a focus on context and the unique needs of the community. A variety of resources are available to assist municipal officials, staff, and the public in embarking on a connected and coordinated effort to advance implementation of complete streets at the municipal level.

Event Details: This workshop is a collaborative effort by the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), Sustainable Jersey, the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University, the New Jersey Department of Transportation and Together North Jersey. The full day training opportunity is structured in four discrete sections, giving the participants the ability to make the most efficient use of their time by choosing the content that best meets their needs.

Workshop Content

Attending the workshop will assist your municipality in the completion of Sustainable Jersey Land Use & Transportation actions including Adopt a Complete Streets Policy, Institute Complete Streets, Bicycle and/or Pedestrian Audit, and Bicycle and/or Pedestrian Plan. The workshop is structured in four discrete sections, giving the participants the ability to make the most efficient use of their time by choosing the content that best meets their needs.

8:30am – 9:30am: What are Complete Streets and why are they important?

This section will cover the basics of Complete Streets, how to create an effective and enforceable policy, what elements to include in a policy, what stakeholders to include when developing a policy, and strategies for adoption and building institutional capacity.

9:45am – Noon: Introduction to Complete Streets Implementation

This section will describe the process of implementing complete streets policies by integrating complete streets in the local planning, zoning, and land development process, as well as in project design and delivery. Participants will learn how to garner support for complete streets implementation by involving stakeholders and members of the community, and evaluate projects with a broader view than vehicle throughput. Special considerations for freight and local deliveries and planning tools such as data-driven analysis, checklists, street audits, bicycle and pedestrian network plans, and implementation action plans will be included.

1:00pm – 3:00pm: Policy and Design Guidance for Implementing Complete Streets

This section will introduce participants to the 2017 New Jersey Complete Streets Design Guide. It will also introduce other resources focusing on how to accommodate truck movements and local parcel deliveries. Participants will review the tools and methodologies for designing complete streets in a variety of settings, with attention to the specific needs of each community.

3:15pm – 4:30pm: Funding Complete Streets Implementation

This section will cover resources that are available to support municipal efforts including funding programs to advance complete streets implementation with an emphasis on the Federal Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), NJTPA’s Complete Streets Technical Assistance Program, and other resources.

Questions about the workshops should be directed to Maureen Jones at jonesm@tcnj.edu or 609-771-2855.
