Road Safety Audits

The NJTPA has partnered with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to offer a Road Safety Audit (RSA) to towns and counties in the NJTPA region. An RSA is a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) proven safety countermeasure that consists of a formal safety performance examination of a roadway by an independent, multidisciplinary team. It qualitatively estimates and reports on potential road safety issues and identifies opportunities for improvement in safety for all road users.

NJTPA subregions have been successful in converting short term recommendations from RSAs into federally funded construction projects through the Local Safety Program (LSP). Since 2010, eleven of the NJTPA’s 15 subregions have conducted a total of 51 RSAs. Short term recommendations from 32 of the 51 RSA reports have been or are slated to advance to the NJTPA’s Local Safety Program.
